Shaving Directions [F.A.Q.] May 14, 2010

I would first like to thank all of those who have taken the time and sent in correspondence relating to grooming tips, instructional posts and even the most typical questions about shaving your head bald.

Perhaps the most common question that hits our email box is that relating to the “grain of the hair”.
A very simple [...]

Bald head “Shadow” [F.A.Q.]

We’ve all seen those perfectly bald heads that have absolutely no shadow to them.

Meaning of “Shadow” – the area in which you can visibly see the outline of where the hair used to be.

For those who are intentionally bald, having a shadowless clean shave is the ultimate goal. However, achieving that goal is not a natural process.

There are a few factors that can contribute to a shadowless clean shave look:

  • Male Pattern Baldness taking over
  • Electrolysis and Hair Removal Treatments
  • Makeup

Shadow exists because the hair root still exists after shaving. As long as the hair root exists, there will always be a shadow. See illustration of hair root.

Electrolysis and hair removal treatments kill the root, resulting in less shadow. However, if that is what your ultimate goal is, there are less expensive and less painful ways to go about it such as makeup or foundation that closely matches your skin tone.

Advantages and disadvantages of a bald head [F.A.Q.]

The decision to take it all off and go completely bald is not always an easy one to make.

While some intentionally shave their heads bald in search of a new look, presence or attitude, others are not given that opportunity. They are left no choice due to unfortunate circumstance.

Either way, its not the end of the world, just the beautiful beginning of a new world – as bald is beautiful.

Here is a brief list of advantages and disadvantages of taking it all off. Although brief, it highlights some of the first thoughts that crosses ones mind before the first stroke of the blade.

Advantages

  1. No more bad hair days. Its all gone, so you do not have to worry about wasting time primping or fixing your hair.
  2. Less money spent on hair products. Although, you will still purchase moisturizers and lotion, you will use a lot less of them.
  3. Comfort-ability. There is nothing like having the wind blow on your clean shaven head or laying down on a nice soft pillow with nothing in between.

Disadvantages

  1. Cold weather. The body looses most of its body heat through the top of the head. So you may want to consider keeping suitable headgear around if your going to be out in the cold a lot.
  2. Keeping it clean and close. In order to keep a fresh looking shave, regular maintenance is required. Usually, every three days works for the clean and close look.
  3. Head shape. If your looking for style, consider the shape of your head first. Not every head is designed for the bald head style.

As there are many more advantages and disadvantages for the bald head style, a suggestion would be to go with a low cut before final determination of taking it all off.

Why shave your head? [F.A.Q.]

For those of us who are bald by choice, perhaps the most common question is: WHY?
