Perhaps the most common question that hits our email box is that relating to the “grain of the hair”.

A very simple explanation is, you will either shave against or with the grain of the hair. The illustration clearly explains the differences between the two.

Please keep those questions coming and we will answer them in future articles.

Does shaving cause hair to grow back faster? [F.A.Q.]

Shaving your head or any other part of your body for the matter does not cause your hair to grow back faster or thicker. This is nothing more than an myth.

However, the appearance of a hair cut or shave can portray faster and thicker growth.

Thicker Growth

When shaving, a razor will cut the hair at an flat angle. When the hair actually starts to grow back, there is an illusion of darkness and thickness. Many people mistake this for thicker hair growth.Once the hair grows back, the angled look will smooth out and the hair will appear to be normal as before it was cut.

Faster Growth

Natural hair growth is approximately half an inch per month. When hair is cleanly shaven, the appearance of a bald or cleanly shaven head is what is seen. Once the hair starts to grow back, the initial appearance of stubble leads people to think that hair is growing back faster, even if its shorter than it was at the time of the shave or haircut.

Although shaving does not cause your hair to grow back any faster, its atleast worth mentioning that some medical conditions do cause hair growth in men and women. Hirsutism is a condition that causes male hair growth in women. If your noticing unusually faster than normal hair growth, consult your physician.
